LOST PLANET 3" is a prequel to the original "Lost Planet: Extreme Condition" and "Lost Planet 2," taking players back to the unforgiving, ice-bound planet of E.D.N. III. Developed by Spark Unlimited and published by Capcom, it shifts the series' focus somewhat, emphasizing story, character, and a more grounded, survival-horror-infused atmosphere, while retaining the franchise's signature blend of on-foot third-person shooting and massive mech combat.

The story of "LOST PLANET 3" follows Jim Peyton, a rig pilot and family man who leaves Earth to take on a hazardous but lucrative contract on E.D.N. III. His mission is to assist Neo-Venus Construction (NEVEC) in preparing the planet for colonization by surveying uncharted terrain and locating new sources of "Thermal Energy"—a vital resource needed back on an energy-starved Earth. Jim's motivation is deeply personal: he's working to provide for his wife and newborn child, sending video messages back home that punctuate the narrative and provide a human element to his perilous journey.

As Jim delves deeper into E.D.N. III's icy wastes, he begins to uncover a conspiracy that predates NEVEC's current expedition. He encounters "The Forgotten," a group of survivors from a previous, unacknowledged colonization attempt, and discovers hidden truths about the planet's history and NEVEC's true intentions. The narrative is more cinematic and character-driven than previous Lost Planet titles, aiming for a more intimate and suspenseful tone.

Gameplay in "LOST PLANET 3" is divided between two distinct experiences:

  1. On-Foot Combat: As Jim, players engage in third-person shooter combat against the planet's indigenous and hostile alien lifeforms, the Akrid. Combat is more cover-based and deliberate than the fast-paced action of "Lost Planet 2," with a focus on resource management and exploiting Akrid weak points (typically glowing orange). Jim uses a variety of firearms, grenades, and a melee attack. The environments often feature tight, enclosed spaces, contributing to a sense of claustrophobia and horror.
  2. Utility Rig Combat: A significant portion of the game involves piloting Jim's massive Utility Rig from a first-person perspective. This heavily armored mech is primarily designed for construction and repair work, equipped with a large drill and a grabbing claw. While not initially a combat machine, it becomes a crucial tool for battling larger Akrid, navigating treacherous terrain, and overcoming environmental obstacles. Rig combat emphasizes defensive maneuvers, strategic use of the tools, and close-quarters brawls against colossal beasts. The rig can be upgraded with various components found or purchased.

The game features a semi-open world structure, with the main base, Coronis, serving as a hub from which Jim takes on main story missions and various side quests. These side quests often involve repairing equipment, clearing Akrid nests, or investigating anomalies, providing Thermal Energy (which now acts as currency for upgrades) and additional lore. The extreme weather conditions of E.D.N. III, including blizzards and thermal storms, remain a constant threat, impacting visibility and environmental hazards.

Why to Play LOST PLANET 3:

  • Story-Driven Experience: Unlike its predecessors, LP3 offers a more focused and personal narrative, with a likable protagonist in Jim Peyton and a compelling mystery unraveling around him. The video messages to his wife add a unique emotional layer.
  • Atmosphere and Setting: The game excels at creating a bleak, isolated, and often genuinely creepy atmosphere on E.D.N. III. The environmental detail, sound design, and the constant threat of the unknown contribute to a strong sense of place.
  • Distinct Combat Styles: The alternation between agile, on-foot third-person shooting and the slower, more impactful first-person mech combat provides satisfying gameplay variety. The utility rig feels appropriately heavy and powerful.
  • Prequel Lore: For fans of the Lost Planet universe, LP3 provides crucial backstory, explaining the origins of NEVEC's presence on E.D.N. III and setting the stage for the events of the first game.
  • Underrated Gem: While it received mixed reviews at launch, often due to its departure from the previous games' formula, many players have since re-evaluated it as a solid and enjoyable action-horror experience, especially for those who prefer a strong single-player campaign.
  • Accessible Third-Person Shooter: Its more traditional third-person shooter mechanics (compared to the more unique systems of LP1/2) make it easier to pick up for players familiar with modern shooters.
