Blue Reflection 2017" refers to the original "Blue Reflection" game, the first entry in the magical girl JRPG series developed by Gust and published by Koei Tecmo.
It had its initial release in Japan on March 30, 2017, for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. The game later saw a Western release in September 2017, specifically on September 26, 2017, for North America and September 29, 2017, for Europe, on both PlayStation 4 and PC (Microsoft Windows via Steam).
Game Overview: "Blue Reflection" is a unique turn-based role-playing game that masterfully blends the daily life of a Japanese high school with fantastical magical girl combat. The story centers on Hinako Shirai, a former ballet prodigy whose dreams are shattered by a severe knee injury. As she returns to her normal high school life, she is suddenly bestowed with the powers of a "Reflector" by two mysterious sisters, Yuzu and Lime.
As a Reflector, Hinako gains the ability to traverse "the Common," a surreal alternate dimension representing the collective unconscious of humanity. Here, she must confront and defeat powerful Demons and Sephira, creatures born from negative human emotions.
The core gameplay loop is divided between:
- School Life Simulation: Players spend time at Hoshinomiya Girls High School, interacting with a diverse cast of classmates. Building strong relationships and deepening bonds with these girls is crucial, as their emotional "fragments" translate into powerful support abilities and benefits for Hinako in combat.
- Dungeon Crawling & Combat in the Common: Venturing into the Common involves exploring abstract environments and engaging in strategic turn-based battles. The combat system features unique elements like an "Ether" resource for skills, and a timeline system where players can manipulate turn order by knocking enemies back or boosting their own characters.
"Blue Reflection" is known for its distinctive art style by Mel Kishida, its focus on emotional themes, and the power of friendship among its all-female cast. Despite some initial technical limitations on PC at launch, it offers a compelling narrative and a fresh take on the JRPG genre for those who enjoy character-driven stories and magical girl aesthetics.
